Reasons Behind

Admit it, there’s that weird side of you that’s just dying to go out; namely the side that craves for food, specifically our own weird food concoctions. This can range from a variety of dishes, each unique to a person’s taste buds. People all around the world want to eat different kinds of dishes that normal restaurants wouldn’t be caught dead serving. Eating S’mores would have been a normal occurrence in a campsite but instead, you dip graham crackers in water. That makes you an oddity, a weirdo.

Ever wonder why this happens? No, it isn’t some weird glitch in our DNA or a sign of dementia. As a person who also enjoys eating weird food that I have somehow concocted together, I do so because I enjoy food, especially when adjusted to my taste. Don’t get me wrong, I love the occasional drive-thru in McDonalds but there’s something fascinating about creating my own recipes that aren’t found in restaurants or supermarkets.

No, I don’t enjoy cooking. That’s probably why I the dishes listed here are already cooked, baked, or packed because God knows I could probably blow up the whole house when I’m left alone in the kitchen. We most likely feel as though we can pig out after creating something on our own. It makes us feel like Master Chefs in our own kitchens. Or perhaps it makes us feel better after a really bad day that we just want to curl up on the couch and stuff our faces with anything we can get our hands on.

Whatever your reasons are for concocting weird dishes, remember to eat without fear of prejudice. Be confident in the fact that you’re at home and no one but your family can see you. Anyway, it’s not like you binge every day, just do so occasionally. Learn to create your own dishes that may seem odd to others but something that you enjoy. It can be your little secret and if they have no idea that it tastes good, then you can pig out to your heart’s content without having to share.

More Coke Please!

This, by far, is probably one of the oddest combos that I have ever had the privilege of blogging about. I was asking my classmates on what kind of weird food combinations they normally binge on and I was really shocked when she told me that she mixes spicy instant noodles with milk. And here I was, thinking that no one could probably beat my weirdness level. While I wrapped my head around that idea, I was also having an internal debate whether I should be impressed or cringing in disgust.

Anyway, she probably noticed my lack of response because the very next day, she told me to visit her at her house. And guess what I found? The very odd combination of instant noodles and milk were sitting innocently side by side, as though waiting for my arrival. I purposely did not eat before coming to her house because I had a feeling she was going to make me do this.

Okay, game time. As I readied my stomach for the gut-wrenching upheaval that I was sure was coming, I was mildly surprised when it didn’t. Instead, I found myself actually swallowing the whole thing down. The taste honestly takes some getting used to but after a few gulps, I found out that it really wasn’t too bad.

The spiciness of the noodles is moderated by the milk, which in turn gives the noodles a hint of creaminess and sweetness. As I said, the taste takes a bit of getting used to, so you might want to bring a few bottles of coke before trying anything.

Zombie Takeout

It’s a dark and stormy night and your favorite horror flick is on. Suddenly the clock strikes twelve and you literally jump off the couch as the zombie hand pops dramatically out of the ground. Whew! Your heart stopped beating for a while there. Maybe it’s time for a little midnight snack lest you turn into a zombie yourself.

Humming to yourself while rummaging in the pantry for something to eat is no easy task especially with the TV blaring in the living room. The screams of the undead bounce off the walls, a shudder runs up and down your spine and you just want to enclose yourself in the safety of your couch. The easiest and fastest movie snack would be grahams and water, trust me. Especially if that movie happens to be the Walking Dead, then you’re better off wrapped in a blanket in the sofa.

The sweetness of the graham cracker is a sure answer for that much needed sugar rush and the water is a welcome respite for the burn in your throat after hours of screaming. All you have to do is take a graham cracker, dip it in water, and voila! Just make sure you don’t stare at the TV screen for too long that you’ve left the graham cracker too soggy. It tastes better with that added crunch and you won’t have to keep picking at the broken pieces that have sunk to the bottom of your glass.

It is so easy to make and weirdly delicious that you won’t even mind the headless zombie swinging the machete around. A sure zombie movie-fest snack partner is at hand and you didn’t even have to stay long in the kitchen to spread jam on toast. Just make sure not to spill anything or your mom’s wrath in the morning will be a hell lot scarier than all the zombie movies combined.

PB & B Combo

Are the ‘rents always bugging you to eat fruits every day? Maybe it’s time to give them a chance and take a small bite of the fruit that disgusts you the least. If you think it’s no good then you have obviously never tried everything. Even you can make those fruit pieces disappear in about two seconds flat. And no, it doesn’t involve the garbage can or your dog. All you need is two pieces of bread and a little bit of imagination.

Why not try putting together a peanut butter and banana sandwich? There have been positive reviews about this weird food combo all over the internet so I have decided to give it a little test-run. And the jury is in! Those critiques obviously knew what they were talking about because this is definitely one of the best-tasting sandwiches I have ever tried.

All you need is two or perhaps more slices of your favorite bread, a jar of peanut butter, and one ripe banana. Simply slap them together and savor the goodness. The sweetness of the banana combined with the peanut butter’s own is simply heaven.  They mix very well together that even someone like me, who basically avoids vegetables and fruit, can’t resist being drawn to this heavenly concoction. Their flavors are just so good together that taking them apart should be considered as murder.

Now don’t go looking at me with your eyebrows all drawn together. Believe me when I say that this combo is literally manna from the gods.

Italian Medley

If the Chinese gifted us with noodles then guess what the Italians have up their sleeves? That’s right, Italian ice cream is all the rage now especially in one particular store namely: Gelatissimo. If you’ve never been to a Gelatissimo store before, then you’ve missed half of your life. They not only serve up delicious soft-serve Italian ice cream but also give free tastings as well. I consider this the best Italian ice cream shop ever created. It is also home to one of the weirdest yet amazingly delicious ice cream flavors I have ever come upon.

Have you ever tasted or even heard of lime ice cream? It’s not exactly common so I decided to feature it right here in my blog. This weirdly delicious ice cream is being served by Gelatisssimo which, in my opinion, is the most popular Italian ice cream shop. Gelatissimo has many branches but if you ever come to Cebu, Philippines, go to The Terraces in Ayala because the view is perfect for eating ice cream.

Anyway, if you’re not exactly an adventurous eater, this is one dessert you definitely have to try. My friend loves weird food concoctions just like me, and he was by far, the bravest of us to try this odd dessert. With a fondness for berries and for anything weird, Lime Ice Cream was definitely high on his list. He described it as to eating vanilla ice cream with a hint of sourness. He swears on his iPad that it was the most delicious combo because the flavors just blend perfectly together that your taste buds will definitely go into hyper-drive.

It’s the perfect day for window shopping at the mall and it’s never complete without food. You and your friends could relax and finish up the day’s shopping by popping into this quaint little shop. Don’t forget to try the Lime Ice Cream; otherwise you’ve missed a perfectly good example of Italian masterpiece. With the perfect view and a delicious ice cream at hand, what more could you ask for?

Mozzarella Madhouse

Everyone is tearing, biting, and grabbing at everything they can reach. It’s turning into a madhouse before your very eyes. But no, it isn’t Brad Pitt or Ryan Reynolds being dropped off by a shiny black limo. It’s your posse, your team, your buddies, or you can simply call them your friends. They’ve just barged into your front door and made themselves comfortable in front of the TV. Sooner or later the pizza boxes are going to stack up and their hungry bellies aren’t going to wait much longer for the second batch.

Why not try to create a new kind of pizza that’s both unique yet oddly satisfying? I’ve recently discovered a new pizza being offered by Alberto’s Pizza which is the Oreo Pineapple Pizza. By the way, this is only available for order in the Philippines but you and your friends can learn to make your own. That is, if your mom trusts you enough not to blow up the whole house.

The ingredients are very simple: tomato sauce, crushed oreos, thin crust pizza, mozzarella cheese, and pineapples. Just make it like you would make any old pizza but for starters, here's how it will work. First, spread tomato sauce on top of your thin crust. Second, add as much mozzarella cheese as you want. The more, the better! Third, scatter the pineapples on top, in any shape that you prefer. You can add more cheese if you like, nobody' stopping you. Add the finishing touch which is your crushed oreos, pop it in the oven, and voila!

My first impression was that no way was I spending money on a pizza topped with Oreos. I mean that just sounds weird right? But I’m glad I did because I now hold in my hands the money to purchase more. The only moments my friends and I are found silent are when we are eating this odd yet
somehow delectable dish. And if you cherish your sanity and want to spend a few quiet moments with your friends, contemplating the forces at work in the universe, then this is definitely the odd combo for you.

Weekend Noodle Madness

The creation of the noodles by the Chinese is most probably their best legacy to mankind. With the advent of technology, man has been able to improve their creations thus resulting in the birth of the instant noodles. It is a great way to enjoy eating noodles without the hassles of cooking for too long or perhaps, not even cooking at all.

Due to a certain person’s, namely me, passion for weird concoctions, I scoured the internet for weird recipes involving noodles. It was then that I realized that the internet was no match for the recipe my cousin had in mind: cooking instant beef noodle soup with chips! I guess weirdness does run in the family.

We poured half a bag of Nova Chips into a pot of instant beef noodle soup and stirred it but not so much that the Doritos turned soggy. And the result was a messy table and a simply sublime creation. The Doritos gave the chicken noodle soup the added crunch that we thought it needed. The beef noodles soup alone was, as usual, very tasty but not weird enough for us. The saltiness of the chips and the homemade goodness of the noodle soup was a weirdly delicious combination.

This is concoction is great for afternoon snacks or for those boring weekends with nothing to do. Maybe a bit unhealthy but one won’t kill you.

It's Bacon-tastic!

Ever heard of Burger King’s Bacon Sundae dessert as part of their Summer Menu last year? Well, there have been reviews regarding this dessert and the critics had very mixed reactions. Seeing as that the Philippines didn’t have a Burger King branch last year, we were unable to taste their dish and make reviews ourselves. Well that and the fact that it was only available for a limited time and having it shipped would have just been plain stupid.

As I read about this dessert on the Internet, I wondered how on earth something like bacon could possibly mix with ice cream. I like bacon and I like ice cream but even I have never had the guts to mix those two together. I’m weird but this is just too much right? So I decided to make a small serving and throw the rest out if it sucked.  But somehow I was surprised that even someone like me, who can’t even cook an omelet right, was able to whip up a yummy dessert.

My homemade version of this dessert was using soft-served vanilla ice cream, chocolate fudge syrup, and a few strips of crispy fried bacon.  I was able to create a dessert that was more or less edible and delicious. Well, maybe it was nothing like the sundae from Burger King but it definitely fit my standards of a weird yet delicious dessert.

The saltiness of the bacon was a nice contrast to the sweetness of the ice cream. The flavors blended well together especially when the crispy bacon was coated in chocolate fudge syrup. The sweetness and saltiness was simple heavenly. You can feel the crispiness of the bacon as it breaks off into chunks while you chew it slowly. Savor the rich taste of the bacon as it mixes with the ice cream and you’ll find yourself wanting for more. So if you’re a bacon lover, throw a chef’s hat on and waddle into the kitchen for a bacon-filled dessert.

Snacks for Sloths

When you’re curled up and cozy on the couch while watching your favorite chick flick, your body becomes relaxed and no one can move you out of your comfy position.

You glance to the kitchen and wonder if it’s worth the trouble to make a snack. You sigh and shake your head but the rumbling in your stomach never ceases. In the end, you succumb to the admonitions of your belly and heave yourself off the couch.

You open whatever door you find and grab whatever item you can reach. You place them on the table and wonder what the heck you can make out of these items: a jar of peanut butter, a bag of chips, and a loaf of bread. Sure it’ll taste just as good when you eat it separately, but why not try and to let go of all rational thinking and let your taste buds guide you?

This is a dish that I have only just discovered and it tastes superb! You can really feel the mouthwatering saltiness of the chips mixing with just the right amount of sweetness from the peanut butter. A deluge of flavors overwhelm your senses and right now, it’s just you and your food. Oozing with flavor, this is definitely up on my list of must-try's!

I’m no food critic but trust my word on this. If you’re too lazy to haul yourself and make something edible to eat, just slap these three ingredients together and voila! A bottle of Coke also goes a long way so be sure to buy a least a few bottles. Your TV buddies will definitely sing you praises for raising the bar in sloth bingeing.
